LOUISIANA ORNITHOLOGICAL SOCIETY
MINUTES OF THE 2007 WINTER MEETING
 
LaPlace, Louisiana - Friday, February 2, 2007

The meeting was called to order by President Bill Fontenot at 7:00 P.M. Bill welcomed members and guests. Bill asked new members to stand and introduce themselves.

Bill thanked those who worked to organize the meeting:
1. Orleans Audubon Society and Crescent Bird Club
2. Phil Fischer, Joelle Finley and Judith O’Neale for the hotel and banquet arrangements
3. Jennifer Coulson for the great field trips
4. All of the field trip leaders
5. Judith, Joelle, Dennis Demchek and Kay Radlauer for working the registration and sales tables

Bill introduced the LOS officers and board of directors: President Bill Fontenot, Vice-President Nancy Menasco, Treasurer Judith O’Neale, Secretary Joelle Finley, Past-President Karen Fay and board members Joan Brown (not present), Jackie Duncan, and Ed Wallace. A special welcome was given to Bob Hamilton, the new editor of the LOS News. JLO Editor Jim Ingold (not present) was also introduced.

Bill introduced David Muth and Phillip Wallace who presented the evening program, “A New Orleans Big Year—the Rewards of Restricted Area Birding”. David is the Chief of Planning and Resource Stewardship at Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. Phillip is the Middle School Principal at Isidore Newman School in New Orleans. He has been birding for 26 years, is a member of the LA Birds Records Committee and regional editor of Central Southern Region for North American Birds spring season. In 2004 they competed with each other to see who could observe the most birds in Orleans Parish.

Karen Fay announced a birding trip to Peru in the fall of 2007. Contact Karen for details. Lamskite@aol.com

Jennifer Coulson announced the field trips for Saturday. Trips were to Venice, South Shore, North Shore, Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, Hummingbirds, Audubon Park, and Bonnet Carre Spillway.

Joelle Finley and Judith O’Neale drew for door prizes.

Bill reminded everyone that a hot breakfast will be served in the hotel restaurant starting at 6 AM and wished everyone a good night and a good day birding on Saturday.

The meeting adjourned at 9:30 P.M.

Bill introduced the officers and board of directors of LOS, President Bill Fontenot, Vice-President Nancy Menasco, Treasurer Judith O’Neale, Secretary Joelle Finley, Past-President Karen Fay, and board members Joan Brown (not present), Jackie Duncan and Ed Wallace. A special welcome was given to Bob Hamilton the new LOS News editor. Jim Ingold (not present) was introduced as the JLO editor.

Bill introduced the evening speaker, Dr. Jennifer Coulson who spoke on the “Population ecology of Swallow-tailed Kites Nesting in Southern Louisiana and Mississippi”. Jennifer received a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Tulane University. She reported on discoveries obtained from her long-term study on Swallow-tailed Kites nesting in the Atchafalaya River, Lake Pontchartrain and Pearl River Basins. Her talk focused on factors that impact this breeding population, including the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Her slides included some stunning photos of kites and also pre- and post-Katrina aerial shots of the Honey Island swamp.

Ed Wallace called the check list- 154 species + 2 additional species on Sunday. Notable species were black, surf and white winged scoters, American bittern, Swainson’s and broad-winged hawks, long-tailed duck, great kiskadee and 6 species of hummingbirds.

Karen Fay announced an upcoming birding trip to Peru in the fall of 2007. Contact Karen at lamskite@aol.com for details.

Jennifer Coulson announced Sunday’s field trips to Bonnet Carre Spillway, Hummingbirds, North Shore and a Hurricane Katrina Levee Break Tour.

Joelle Finley and Judith O’Neale drew for door prizes.

Bill asked for everyone to please return the name badges. The meeting adjourned at 9:15 P.M.
