MINUTES OF THE 2006 WINTER MEETING
 
Shreveport, Louisiana - Friday, January 27, 2006

Ron Martin welcomed all participants on behalf of the Bird Study Group and turned the meeting over to LOS President Karen Fay at 7:15 P.M. Karen welcomed all new members, guests and out of town visitors. She welcomed those affected by Hurricane Katrina and pledged that LOS would help in any way. Karen thanked the BSG Planning Committee:

Karen introduced the current officers and board members: Vice-president Bill Fontenot, Treasurer Judith O'Neale, Secretary Joelle Finley, Board members Joan Brown, David Booth (absent) and Lee Ellis (absent). Also introduced were JLO Editor Jim Ingold and LOS News Editors Kay Radlauer and Dennis Demcheck (absent).

The new slate of officers and one board member were presented as follows:

Karen asked if there were any other nominations from the floor. Rosemary Seidler moved to accept the slate of candidates, seconded by Mary Joe Krieger. A voice vote of the membership unanimously elected the candidates. President Bill Fontenot thanked everyone for coming and thanked Karen for her outstanding job as President.

Jim Ingold introduced Carol Dwyer from Austin, Texas, who works with Fermata, Inc. Carol's presentation was entitled "Developing and Marketing the America's Wetland Birding Trail, Red River and Mississippi River Trails". Bill Fontenot introduced Richard Gibbons who is the coordinator for the Louisiana Bird Resource Center at LSU and is working on the Louisiana Winter Bird Atlas Project. The mission is to facilitate the development of Louisiana bird tourism, research and conservation. He is looking for volunteers perform bird surveys with one compiler per quad. The format will be similar to the Christmas Bird Count format. There will be online maps, forms, data entry and the surveys will take place the winters of 2007-08 (10 January-17 February). The results will be printed in 2009. A website will be set up at www.lsu.edu/birdcenter

Susan Martin awarded door prizes.

Nancy Menasco discussed the field trips for Saturday morning and afternoon.

A striking video shot by Bill Wayman was shown depicting the life of a pair of Loggerhead Shrikes as they tended a nest and raised several baby shrikes.

Joelle Finley introduced the evening's speaker, Dr. Mike Braun, who is a research scientist at the Smithsonian Institute. Mike received his PhD at LSU Medical Center in New Orleans studying the speciation of towhees in Mexico. The title of Mike's presentation was "Evolving Species and Species Concepts (or why the AOU just won't leave your life list alone)".

Bill introduced Richard Gibbons from LSUBR who spoke about his upcoming Louisiana Winter Bird Atlas Project. He is soliciting volunteers for the bird survey. A special gift was presented to Past-president Karen Fay for her contribution to LOS above and beyond the call of duty. Her term was extended due to the cancellation of the fall meeting.

The Spring LOS meeting will be held in Grand Isle on April 28-29, 2006.

Bill read the checklist and a total of birds were seen.

Nancy Menasco announced the Sunday field trips.
