Award History/Info

In 2001 the Board of Directors of the Louisiana Ornithological Society established two awards to honor persons that contribute significantly to Louisiana birding and enhance or conserve Louisiana wildlife habitat.
 
All LOS members are encouraged to nominate persons, families, companies and organizations that meet the criteria to receive one of the two awards. To nominate a person, please send the name of the nominee and a brief written description of the nominee's accomplishments to any LOS Board Member. The LOS Webpage (http://losbird.org) and the LOS newsletter "LOS News" contain the names and addresses of all LOS Board Members. Deadline for submissions: January 1st.

THE GEORGE H. LOWERY AWARD
 
The LOS George H. Lowery Award was established by the Louisiana Ornithological Society to honor the late George H. Lowery, Jr. Dr. Lowery was an outstanding ornithologist of international reputation.
 
The Award was approved by a majority of the membership at the spring meeting of the LOS in Cameron, LA in 1981.
 
In 2001, the Board of Directors of the LOS modified the original document to meet the current needs of the organization.
 
Nominees for the George H. Lowery Award can include person(s) who have made a significant contribution to Louisiana birding and/or habitat or who have had a major positive influence on ornithology in Louisiana.
 
The award will be an appropriate gift with a value up to $100.
 
Nominations in writing will describe the accomplishment(s) of the nominee and can be made by any LOS member in good standing to the Selection Committee.
 
The Selection Committee for the George H. Lowery Award will be the Board of Directors of the LOS. A majority vote of the Selection Committee is needed to approve the Award.
 
The George H. Lowery Award is the premier recognition award of the LOS.
 
THE LOS PRESIDENT'S AWARD
 
The LOS President's Award was instituted to recognize persons, families, companies, and organizations who support birding in Louisiana, who enhance or take special measures to conserve wildlife habitat in Louisiana, or who promote birding in Louisiana through their writing, lectures, or other avenues.
 
Nominations for the LOS President's Award can be made by any LOS member in good standing by submitting to the LOS Board of Directors a brief written summary of why the LOS should recognize the nominee.
 
The Board of Directors by majority vote will determine which nominees are selected to receive the LOS President's Award. It is anticipated that no more than three awards will be presented annually.
 
The LOS President's Award will be an appropriate gift not to exceed $50 in value.
 
A profile of the recipient(s) will appear in the "LOS News".
