Light conditions:

Sun directly overhead.  The bird was well-lit

Optical equipment: 

Leica 10x42 binoculars, good condition

Distance to bird(s): 

ca. 25-30ft

Duration of observation:

ca. 15 minutes

Habitat: 

moist soil unit surrounded by mature bottomland hardwood

Behavior of bird: 

The bird was observed at rest and foraging, sallying for insects in typical flycatcher fashion.

Description: 

Dark, gray-brown bird above and below.  Salmon colored lower belly and flanks, blackish tail. Dark gray throat and upper breast. Bill, tarsi, and feet black, eyes dark.  Size and shape similar to Eastern Phoebe.

Similar species:

Eastern Phoebe similar in size, shape, overall proportions.  This bird was darker overall, more brownish.  Black tail and darker colored head stood out.  Dark throat and breast, salmon-colored flanks and belly eliminate Eastern.
