1. English and Scientific names: Rough-legged Hawk

2. Number of individuals, sexes, ages, general plumage (e.g., 2 in alternate plumage):

 One

3.  Parish: Orleans

Specific Locality:  along Highway 11, north of Hwy 90

4. Date(s) when observed: March 13, 1982.  I have limited memory of this sighting but was asked to submit to the LOSBRC as there was no prior documentation of this record.  I believe this bird was found by others previously and that we went to look for it (I do not think we were the first to find/identify this bird), but I am not sure of this.

5. Time(s) of day when observed: I believe we went in the late morning.  We birded initially along road 434 in St. Tammany Parish and then went to this location.

6. Reporting observer and address:  Jim Holmes

4109 U Street, Sacramento, CA 95817

7. Other observers accompanying reporter who also identified the bird(s): My father, James Holmes, Sr., also saw this bird.

8. Other observers who independently identified the bird(s): If I remember correctly, the bird had been identified previously by others (not sure who).

9. Light conditions (position of bird in relation to shade and to direction and amount of light): I do not remember.

10. Optical equipment (type, power, condition): We had a scope and binoculars but I am not sure what equipment we had in 1982.

11. Distance to bird(s): I do not remember.  The bird was perched on a perch over the marsh and then seen in flight.

12. Duration of observation: I do not remember.  I do remember that we were able to set up the scope and watch it from the road.

13. Habitat: marsh

14. Behavior of bird / circumstances of observation (flying, feeding, resting; include and stress habits used in identification; relate events surrounding observation): It was seen perched and then in flight

15. Description (include only what was actually seen, not what "should" have been seen; include if possible: total length/relative size compared to other familiar species; body bulk, shape, proportions; bill, eye, leg, and plumage characteristics. Stress features that separate it from similar species, or for species that are known to hybridize frequently, stress features that help eliminate possible hybrids):

From my notes (from the day of observation): “watched through scope for long time. light head and dark belly. when it flew, white rump seen well, dark wrist to underside of wing (no red in tail).”

16. Voice: I do not remember hearing the bird

17. Similar species (include how they were eliminated by your observation): From my notes, we excluded Red-tailed Hawk based on lack red in tail and on the wing and tail pattern.

18. Photographs or tape recordings obtained? (by whom? attached?): none

19. Previous experience with this species: none.  This was the 1st time that I saw this species.

20. Identification aids: (list books, illustrations, other birders, etc. used in identification):

a. at time of observation: I do not remember.

b. after observation:
