Winter 1999-2000 was another outstanding season for Broad-taileds in Louisiana, including "seven banded by Nancy L. Newfield alone" (NAB 54(2): 189). Unfortunately, many of the initial reports from that winter have never been submitted to the LBRC, resulting in an incomplete picture. The species was removed from the Review List in September 2002 as the number of reports per winter remained relatively high through 2001-2002.

Unaccepted Records

One immature (89-151) on 29 Oct. 1989, Orleans: New Orleans (AB 44(1):107). The identification was based on the observer's impression that the bird appeared "large" and that it possessed a few "rose red" feathers in the gorget. Unfortunately, the size was estimated, because no other hummingbirds were available for a side-by-side comparison. Rufous was not reported to be present in any of the tail feathers; Broad-taileds should show some rufous in all tail feathers except the central pair. The underparts were reported as grayish-white with buff flanks and sides, a description actually more consistent with Rubythroated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris). The gorget feathers of immature Ruby-throated Hummingbirds can appear rose-red at some light angles. There was no discussion of the bird's relative proportions (i. e., bill or tail length). The bird was not heard.

One in female-type plumage (1992-73) from 21-24 Jul 1992, Orleans: New Orleans. The written details of the observation were extremely brief, and members found the supporting photographs to be unconvincing.

One immature male (1993-57) from 22-24 Nov 1993, St. John the Baptist: Reserve. The report and description, submitted by only one of three observers, were considered insufficient to confirm the identification. As is the case for any previously reviewed record, the Committee welcomes additional documentation, and, if warranted by new documentation, will re-review any record.

One immature male (1994-108) on 26 Dec 1994, Cameron: Cameron. The disappointingly brief description (resulting from a relatively long 10 minute observation) was not considered adequate to identify this bird to genus, much less to species. Observers, regardless of their experience, should always provide as much detail as possible to support their observation, including reasons why the bird was considered to be a member of a particular genus, e.g., Selasphorus hummingbird, Piranga tanager, etc.- LBRC members cannot be expected to fill-inthe- blanks during record review.

One immature male (1995-136) on 27 Dec 1995, Caddo: Shreveport. The description did not convincingly eliminate other Selasphorus species.

One immature (1996-59) on 18-25 December 1996, East Baton Rouge: Baton Rouge, Seven Oaks Dr. The report consisted of a photo with no supporting written documentation. Although some Members were convinced by the photo, which appeared to show some Broad-tailed characters, others believed that the birds missing tail and the lack of a description were insurmountable problems.

One adult male (1997-01) on 4 January 1997, St. Tammany: Covington, 23 Cardinal Rd. This bird was observed on a Christmas Bird Count. Two observers provided only minimal and somewhat contradictory details and, although this individual may well have been correctly identified, a majority of Members did not believe that acceptance was warranted.

One immature male (2000-48) on 30 December 2000, East Baton Rouge: Baton Rouge, 909 Rittiner Dr. The description was brief and inadequate to support identification. The observer reported that the homeowners did obtain photos and the Committee would welcome these to re-review this record.

One adult male (2001-076) on 30 December 2001, St. Tammany: Abita Springs, 22315 Main St. Although quite possibly correctly identified, the majority of Members agreed that the description did not contain sufficient information to eliminate Rufous/Allen's hummingbird.

One female/immature male (2002-025) on 26-27 February 2002, East Baton Rouge: Baton Rouge, 4240 Dodson St. (ph). This report went to Discussion Round but, despite the observer's experience, was ultimately not accepted by three Members who believed that the brief looks, relatively rudimentary description, and lack of hard evidence allowed for reasonable doubt.

One immature male (2003-027) on 5 January 2003, East Baton Rouge: Baton Rouge, 9621 North Parkview Dr., Hansen/Kirk residence (ph). Although the written description was suggestive of this species, associated photos were more consistent with a Ruby-throated Hummingbird.
