Light conditions (position of bird in relation to shade and to direction and amount of light):

Early daylight under cloudy sky. Birds were perched in a bare limbed tree, situated so that they could not be observed except with bright background light, poor conditions for observing details of plumage.

Optical equipment:

10x42 binoculars in good condition.

Distance to bird(s):

50' to 100'

Duration of observation:

about 10 minutes.

Habitat:

In a tree on a residential street, very near a palm containing the group nest.

Behavior of bird:

Early in the observation, a number of birds flew from the nest to join others already in the tree. A few later flew from the tree to the nest. The perched birds were resting or preening and a few birds were begging with wing flapping.

Description:

With the poor light conditions, details of plummage could not be distinguished. The basic green of the upperside and the whitish of the throat and breast could be seen. The face was plain, with no stand out markings. The large head with parakeet bill and long pointed tail could be seen.

Voice:

Several gave calls. One flew away from the nest and called repeatedly as it flew.

Similar species:

None.

Photographs or tape recordings obtained?

Photos of birds and nest were taken by the observer. They will be sent in a separate email.

Previous experience with this species:

Many years of observation of the species in New Orleans, Chalmette, Metairie, and Kenner. This nest has been active for at least several years, but this is by far the highest number of individuals I have seen associated with it.
