LOUISIANA BIRD RECORDS COMMITTEE

REPORT FORM

This form is intended as a convenience in reporting observations of species on the Louisiana Bird Records Committee (LBRC) Review List. The LBRC recommends the use of this form or a similar format when submitting records for review (to assure that all pertinent information is accounted for). Attach additional pages as necessary. Please print or type. Attach xerox of field notes, drawings, photographs, or tape recordings, if available. Include all photos for more obscurely marked species. When completed, mail to Secretary, Louisiana Bird Records Committee, c/o Museum of Natural Science, 119 Foster Hall, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA 70803-3216.

1. English and Scientific names:MacGillivray’s Warbler Oporornis tolmiei

2. Number of individuals, sexes, ages, general plumage (e.g., 2 in alternate plumage):

1, generally considered a female, but could it be a first spring male? The lores look rather dark for a female.

3. Locality: LOUISIANA: (parish) ______________________Cameron______________________

Specific Locality: _Peveto sanctuary, east of the parking lot, in its “preferred” thicket almost to the east edge of the woods________________________________________________________

4. Date(s) when observed:27 April 2010

5. Time(s) of day when observed: afternoon

6. Reporting observer and address:B. Mac. Myers III 641 S. 5th St. Eunice, LA 70535

7. Other observers accompanying reporter who also identified the bird(s):not certain, but at least some of the Sid/Carol Gauthreaux, Ken/Mary Able group, and I think Dave Patton also saw it this day

8. Other observers who independently identified the bird(s):Found by Phillip Wallace several days earlier; subsequently seen and photographed by m.ob.

9. Light conditions (position of bird in relation to shade and to direction and amount of light):good

10. Optical equipment (type, power, condition):10x42 Eagle

11. Distance to bird(s):50 -70 ft.

12. Duration of observation: a few minutes off and on as it appeared and disappeared

13. Habitat: Low thick vegetation with some downed timber overgrown with vines, etc. This seemed to be its preferred habitat (though not the original spot) over several days

14. Behavior of bird / circumstances of observation (flying, feeding, resting; include and stress habits used in identification; relate events surrounding observation): skulking within the thicket, occasionally coming out to edge or top and giving good views

15. Description (include only what was actually seen, not what "should" have been seen; include if possible: total length/relative size compared to other familiar species, body bulk, shape, proportions, bill, eye, leg, and plumage characteristics. Stress features that separate it from similar species):A fairly large warbler. Wings and back olive. It had a well-demarcated medium gray hood extending to upper breast. The chin and upper throat was paler, more of an ashy gray. There were well-defined, bold white arcs above and below the eyes. The lores seemed darker than the main hood color. The underparts below the hood and extending back to undertail coverts were bright yellow.

16. Voice:not heard, at least I didn’t record hearing it

17. Similar species (include how they were eliminated by your observation): The well-defined white eye arcs should eliminate Mourning or Mourning/MacGillivray hybrid, and likewise eliminate Connecticut—the only real contenders for confusion.

18. Photographs or tape recordings obtained? (by whom? attached?): I don’t know of photos from this day, but it was photographed by several over the preceding days.

19. Previous experience with this species: a few in LA; a fair number out west

20. Identification aids: (list books, illustrations, other birders, etc. used in identification):

a. at time of observation: none

b. after observation: Dunn and Garret Warbler book—especially for age/sex info

21. This description is written from: _____ notes made during the observation (_____notes attached?);_____notes made after the observation (date:_____); ____x_memory. Very brief notes, and photos onfile at LBRC
