11. Distance to bird(s):  At closest point about 50 feet or less

 

 

12. Duration of observation:  33 minutes

 

 

13. Habitat:  lake

 

 

14. Behavior of bird / circumstances of observation (flying, feeding, resting; include and stress habits used in identification; relate events surrounding observation):  Bird was swimming along and diving to feed next to a boat launch road.

Description (include only what was actually seen, not what "should" have been seen; include if possible: total length/relative size compared to other familiar species, body bulk, shape, proportions, bill, eye, leg, and plumage characteristics. Stress features that separate it from similar species):  bird’s bill was short but somewhat thick with brown around the bill at the back.  The bird’s head and neck were white except that the top of the head down to the bill was a grayish-brown color.  On the cheek area there was a fairly large roundish smudge of grayish brown.  The scapular feathers were brown with some light white on the edges.  The main wing area was brown.  The side was white but with some mottling of light brown.
