The LBRC recommends the use of this form or a similar format when submitting records for review (to assure that all pertinent information is accounted for). Attach additional pages as necessary. 11. Distance to bird(s): mostly 100 yds+, once as close as about 75 ft

12. Duration of observation: approximately 1 minute

13. Habitat: over the channel

14. Behavior of bird / circumstances of observation (flying, feeding, resting; include and stress habits used in identification; relate events surrounding observation): the bird flew past us, going out of the channel, then flew back up the channel, apparently behind a shimp boat but not actively joining the Laughing Gull flock.

Description (include only what was actually seen, not what "should" have been seen; include if possible: total length/relative size compared to other familiar species, body bulk, shape, proportions, bill, eye, leg, and plumage characteristics. Stress features that separate it from similar species): very small gull in heavy molt,  nearly complete hood, tail with black terminal band, wings in heavy molt, but with strongly black carpal region and secondaries (?), spread primaries with a lot of black, especially on outer (webs).  See attached photos.

Similar species (include how they were eliminated by your observation): Bonaparte’s:  larger, probably no hood, less black on secondaries, carpal region, primaries, larger; Black-headed:  larger, dark on primaries, brouwnish cast to secondaries; Sabine’s Gull:  black primaries, brown back/secondaries, etc.
