2. Number of individuals, sexes, ages, general plumage (e.g., 2 in alternate plumage): 1 apparent adult

3. Locality: Parish:  Plaquemines

   Specific Locality: Diamond, just north of Foster’s Road between Hwy 23 and River Rd.

 

4. Date(s) when observed: 21 and 22 January 2012

5. Time(s) of day when observed: 11:00-11:15 on the 21st; around 8:30 a.m. on the 22nd

7. Other observers accompanying reporter who also identified the bird(s): None on the 21st; David Muth and Dan Purrington on the 22nd.

8. Other observers who independently identified the bird(s): Several other observers saw it subsequently.

9. Light conditions (position of bird in relation to shade and to direction and amount of light): Good

10. Optical equipment (type, power, condition): Eagle 10x40 binoculars

11. Distance to bird(s): about 10 meters

12. Duration of observation: about 1 minute viewing time on each occasion.

13. Habitat: Scrubby area at edge of small wood copse; lots of dead stalks of Giant Ragweed, lots of briers and Elderberry.

14. Behavior of bird / circumstances of observation (flying, feeding, resting; include and stress habits used in identification; relate events surrounding observation): Responding to tape of call; vocalizing; skulking. Associated with White-crowned Sparrows.

Description (include only what was actually seen, not what "should" have been seen; include if possible: total length/relative size compared to other familiar species, body bulk, shape, proportions, bill, eye, leg, and plumage characteristics. Stress features that separate it from similar species): Large sparrow with bright white throat set off by black moustachial stripe; reddish crown; greenish-yellow tinge to the wings and long tail. Dark gray breast and back.

16. Voice: Gave “Mew” call repeatedly in response to the tape.

17. Similar species (include how they were eliminated by your observation): Pretty distinctive species; no real ID contenders.

19. Previous experience with this species: I’ve seen out west and also on the Sweet-Cam CBC this past December.
