Sun low in the sky behind us with some clouds. Excellent light.

Duration of observation:

10 minutes off and on as it fed in grass.

Habitat: 

flooded grassy marsh.

Behavior of bird: 

Feeding while swimming among grass tall enough to hide it from time to time. On two occasions, it was spooked and flew into the open water with the other ducks around it. It was then that good details of the plumage could be noted.

Description:

About the same size as Blue-winged Teal near by. Large dark flared bill. Head, neck, and body a deep red color with the head appearing a little darker. Eye distinctly red. Tail looked dark. Blue and green seen in the wing when it flushed from the grass for a short period.

Similar species:

Blue-winged Teal hybrid - No white patch in the flanks or scaled/flecked pattern seen in the breast and shoulder region of the body. Eye was distinctly red.
