Description:

About size of nearby BWTE. Deep cinnamon red color to head, neck, and underparts all the way back to undertail area. It did NOT have the pale patch at the rear of the flanks or the white crescent on the face of male BWTE, There was no trace of either. The scapulars were quite colorful, and seemed to be a bright orangey-ginger color along with a darker color. The bird's iris was red. In flight it showed a wing pattern essentially identical to BWTE.

Voice:

not heard

Similar species:

Males of this species are distinctive. We saw no evidence of hybridism with BWTE, and we specifically looked for any odd or intermediate characteristics.

Photographs or tape recordings obtained?

The bird was too far away for regular photos. It flew before we could figure anything out about trying digiscoping.

Previous experience with this species:

I've seen several in LA and a fair number in the western U.S.

Identification aids:

at time of observation:

none

after observation:

Checked regular guides and Madge and Burn--mainly to see about hybrids
