Specific Locality: Ponchatoula Wastewater Treatment area south of LA Hwy 22 and east of Interstate 55/US Hwy 51.

5. Time(s) of day when observed: approximately 11 am

9. Light conditions (position of bird in relation to shade and to direction and amount of light): Cloud cover partly cloudy but bird in open water area with no direct shade.

10. Optical equipment (type, power, condition): B&L Elite 10x42 binoculars, Bushnell Spacemaster scope

11. Distance to bird(s): 100-150 feet

12. Duration of observation: 30 minutes

13. Habitat: Wastewater Treatment pond

Behavior of bird / circumstances of observation (flying, feeding, resting; include and stress habits used in identification; relate events surrounding observation): Bird was mostly resting on pond baffles that are used to assist with circulation/retention of water in the treatment area. Large numbers of Blue-winged Teal, Green-winged Teal and Northern Shoveler present in treatment area.

Description (include only what was actually seen, not what "should" have been seen; include if possible: total length/relative size compared to other familiar species, body bulk, shape, proportions, bill, eye, leg, and plumage characteristics. Stress features that separate it from similar species): Teal-sized duck with dark reddish head, neck and breast, dark bill and red eye. Pale blue covert feathers on wings observed when bird was preening.
