disturbed and fragmented coastal chenier (live oak-hackberry-honey locust)
woodlot with patches of brushy understory amid rural residential yard and
unimproved pasture with hackberry-tallow scrub. |

(flying, feeding, resting; include and stress habits used in identification;
relate events surrounding observation): Foraging
silently in canopy of mature live oaks. Loosely associated with small
mixed-species flock. |

Description (include only what was actually seen, not what "should" have been seen; include if possible: total length/relative size compared to other familiar species, body bulk, shape, proportions, bill, eye, leg, and plumage characteristics. Stress features that separate it from similar species): Clearly a “Red-eyed”-type vireo with bold facial markings including blackish eyeline, bold whitish supercilium, dull gray crown, and with a distinct, dark malar stripe as the clinching field mark. Also obvious was relatively large bill. Underparts appeared largely whitish with faint yellow wash to vent/ undertail coverts while upperparts appeared dull olive. Irides were dark brown. |

eliminated by distinct, blackish malar stripe, hefty bill, lack of obvious
red in iris, and dull olive upperparts. |
