9. Light conditions (position of bird in relation to shade and to direction and amount of light): An overcast day with a cold front approaching. Windy with no shadows or shade, just a gray day.

10. Optical equipment (type, power, condition): Steiner nocs 8x42 and Bausch and Lomb scope 60x.

11. Distance to bird(s): approx. ½ to ¾ miles from shore.

12. Duration of observation: 5 minutes

13. Habitat: Lake Pontchartrain on channel marker#2.

14. Behavior of bird / circumstances of observation (flying, feeding, resting; include and stress habits used in identification; relate events surrounding observation): Bird seen on channel marker and it was preening. Only stayed about 5 minutes, then took off again.

Description (include only what was actually seen, not what "should" have been seen; include if possible: total length/relative size compared to other familiar species, body bulk, shape, proportions, bill, eye, leg, and plumage characteristics. Stress features that separate it from similar species): Bird was close to cormorant size. Could make out it’s dramatic demarcation between brown on breast/head and white on it’s belly. Long tail. Bill very light colored, flesh colored.

17. Similar species (include how they were eliminated by your observation): don’t know of another bird that looks like this one.

19. Previous experience with this species: None except seeing this one on 4 other visits to the boat launch.
