Fair conditions, no cloud cover, optimal mid-day lighting w/ sun overhead.

Zeiss Victory FL 8x42 (excellent condition)

ca. 5-10 meters

Duration of observation:

~5 min.

Habitat: 

A mature coastal chenier woodlot w/ early successional oak-sugarberry-wild grape thickets on beachfront.

Behavior of bird: 

The vireo was actively foraging b/w subcanopy and canopy and made several short flights to and from undergrowth. 

Description:

A vireo w/ noticeable yellowish wash on sides and flanks, dull greenish-gray on upperparts, and nondescript pale yellow-white below.  Two ill-defined pale wing bars w/ the lower (greater covert) wing bar being more prominent (white).  Faint, incomplete whitish spectacles and dark lores.  Overall dark bill (aside from fleshy proximal portion of lower mandible), dark irides, and blackish legs.

Similar species:

Not an _Empidonax_ flycatcher based on behavior.  Not a kinglet or warbler based on thickness of bill, relatively bold face pattern, overall body coloration, and vireo-like foraging behavior.  WEVIs have broad, yellow spectacles and two conspicuous wing bars.  No other vireos in our region resemble BEVI.

Minimal experience w/ nominate 'eastern' ssp. from IL and TX.  Observed fairly recently on 14 Aug 2007 in Keithsburg, IL.
