Description:

Full adult male. Fresh plumage. Brilliant red crown and throat with a purplish cast. Green back. Dark tail with silver in the webbing. Greenish gray breast and belly. Fresh primaries that were all about the same width, a Calypte characteristic. Tail = 34, wing cord = 49.45, exposed culmen = 18.66, wt = 4.77g.

Sharp chits, and scritchy song.

Similar species:

The Costa's is in the same genus, but smaller and a violet color to the gorget. The Costa's wing cord is 42.3-46.5mm, and the tail 21.0-24.7mm. (Pyle)
