LOS 2011 AWARDS

Dr. George H. Lowery Award:

The Louisiana Ornithological Society recognizes and honors JENNIFER COULSON on this 30th day of April 2011 for her long-term research into the population ecology of the Swallow-tailed Kite in Louisiana and Mississippi. In the early 1900's this majestic bird experienced a severe population decline and significant breeding range loss in the U.S. Dr. Coulson uses nest monitoring, radio-telemetry-based survivorship studies, characterization of nesting and roosting habitat and aerial surveys of premigration roosts to determine current population size and to assess factors that may impact the species. Her outstanding research has not only increased awareness of the needs of Swallow-tailed Kite in Louisiana, but also provided the data needed to make conservation decisions on habitat preservation.

Joelle Finley presents the Lowery Award to Jennifer Coulson at the Orleans Audubon Society/Crescent Bird Club banquet on May 17.
